Capacity Development

Capacity development is a process wherein individuals, communities and organisations adapt, strengthen and maintain their capability to define, plan and achieve their own development objectives in an inclusive, participatory and sustainable way.

Since Transition Kerry was founded in 2007, our principles and overarching approach has been one of capacity development as we undertake to learn, inspire, inform, educate ourselves and all those with whom we collaborate.

Awareness and information evenings, festivals, celebrations conferences, sustainable spaces, workshops and seminars on diverse topics such as food sovereignty, energy, water, waste, transport, sustainable economics, climate change, biodiversity loss, community participation and inner transition have created a broad and colourful canvas which has provided great learning and insight about the complex issues that we are experiencing. This has led to the creation of many networks across the county and further afield.

Capacity development differs from capacity building, as it is a ’from the ground up’ process that supports the unfolding of knowledge, practical skills, tools and systems, which enables a flexible and dynamic approach for all concerned.

Capacity development builds on the existing wisdom, knowledge and experience of the local community.  Change has to be sustainable over time and needs to be generated and managed collectively by those who stand to benefit.

Capacity development enables the renewal of ecological and social wellbeing by strengthening local communities and local economies

Key aspects are:

  • Local Ownership
  • Partnerships & Collaborations
  • Action with a Whole Systems Approach

Central to capacity development is challenging ‘business as usual’ world views.
