Biodiversity, Food & Climate
Biodiversity, food, climate, wellbeing and community resilience are intricately linked at a local and a global level. Transition Kerry is working with individuals, community groups, farmers and organisations in Kerry, to explore and understand how at a local level we can make changes that can have positive impacts on these interconnected issues. Kerry has a vast range of biodiverse landscapes, habitats and ecosystems within the county. These provide us with food, soil, air, water and the beauty that surrounds us.
CLIMATE ACTION
At the outset in 2007 Transition Kerry’s vision was strongly grounded in issues concerning peak oil, climate change and a critical analysis of the impact of economics based on continuous growth which is ecologically destructive and impacts the health and wellbeing of all.
In 2014 an energy descent plan for Kerry was commissioned which led to the formation of
Kerry Sustainable Energy Co-op (KSEC).
Knowledge of the inextricably linked dimensions of all our global ecosystems has brought a greater focus on local actions to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. These have included transition farming, local food initiatives, creation of habitats and nature based responses in many communities.
Recognition of the overwhelm and eco-anxiety that people experience has given rise to workshops on active hope and the employment of a head, heart and hands response, focusing on local initiatives.
We as human beings are an integral part of biodiversity and we influence in both positive and negative ways.
All living things, including humans, do not live in isolation.
All life lives in diverse ecological communities in a ‘web of life’ that is both resilient and fragile.
WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY?
Biodiversity is the foundation of all life on earth and is the term given to describe the variety of all life on earth and their interconnections.
This biological diversity that we see today is the result of millions of years of evolution. It includes the habitats and ecosystems which support this life and these life forms interact with each other and the rest of the environment.
It includes wildlife, plants and domesticated crops and animals. Biodiversity provides food, fresh water, fuel, building materials and sustains all life on this shared earth.
