Transition Kerry and Tralee Bay Wetlands are hosting a series of free community events in September and October, with the support of LAWPRO and Kerry County Council.
We will be celebrating the rivers of Tralee, including the Big River/The Gyle, the Balloonagh River and of course the lovely River Lee after which the the town has been named. There will be 3 events, with all details below.

LAWRPO PUBLIC EVENT 1 – RIVER CYCLE

Meeting Point: Tralee Bay Wetlands
Date: 08/09/2024
Time: 2-3pm: Talk at Tralee Bay Wetlands
Time: 3-5pm: River Cycle (leaving from and returning to Tralee Bay Wetlands)
A psychogeographical exploration of Tralee’s rivers, past, present and future(s).
The afternoon consists of two parts, a talk introducing Tralee’s often misunderstood rivers, followed by a cycle that explores their paths, historic and present, natural and manmade,
These events are presented by Keith Phelan, you are free to join each event individually but for a full deep dive into fluvial Tralee both events are recommended.
The talk will take place at the Wetlands from 2pm to 3pm, this will be followed by the cycle from 3pm to 5pm, this will be at a leisurely pace, departing from and returning to the Wetlands.

LAWRPO PUBLIC EVENT 2 – LIFE ALONG OUR RIVERS
Meeting Point: Brewery Road – Bridge at the River Gyle/The Big River
Date: 28/09/2024
Time: 2.30 – 5pm
This community event will focus on who lives along our rivers, including humans, otters, bats, fish and insects.
We will be introduced on how to assess water quality and prevent littering in our rivers and how to adopt a section to care for.
We will also learn about the importance of the rivers of Tralee as part of our urban ecological corridors.

LAWRPO PUBLIC EVENT 3 – ‘The Rivers of Tralee – An Archaeological Perspective’ with Lar Dunne, Local Archaeologist
Venue: Tralee Bay Wetlands
Date: 12/10/2024
Time: 10am – 1.30pm
‘The past 6,000 years – The archaeology of life in the wetlands of the Tralee / Lee Valley area’
‘Tralee based archaeologist Laurence Dunne will present an overview of the settlement archaeology in the Tralee area from the arrival of the first farmers in the Early Neolithic period (new stone age six millennia ago) to the culverting of the rivers in Tralee Town in the 19th century. The presentation will consist of a talk and slide show followed by a short ecology walk in the Wetlands’.
