Tralee Community Allotments
Tralee Allotments have been in existence for over 15 years. Transition Kerry were instrumental in advocating for and campaigning to ensure allotments would be included in Tralee Town development plans.
Due to various changes to KCC structures, the pandemic and diminished local involvement Tralee allotments were in need of additional supports.
In 2021, Kerry County Council (KCC) contracted Transition Kerry (TK) to undertake a review of Tralee Allotments (Marian Park, Rahoonane, Moyderwell), propose key recommendations (actions) for the future of the allotments, and also recommend roles and interrelationships amongst the key parties ie, KCC, the Community/Allotment Holders, Transition Kerry and NEWKD.

Our Recommendations
In order to maximise the potential of the allotments some key recommendations
for the allotments include:
Develop Effective Structures
Ensure that effective and representative structures are developed, training needs are identified,
some training delivered and a plan developed for the future of the allotments in line with current
community needs.
increased activities
The range of activities including drama, craft making and poetry reading will be increased at the sites to attract more people to become involved.
Biodiversity and Habitat Creation
The allotments be seen as ideal locations for education on the importance of Biodiversity and Habitat Creation and Protection.
Education Hubs
The Allotment sites should be used as Education Hubs on issues such as growing Local Food, Climate Change, Food Preservation, Cooking and Good Diet & Nutrition and include education on topics such as Waste Management, Composting, Reducing Food Waste, Energy and Water Conservation.
intergenerational and cross-cultural
The sites be centres for intergenerational and cross-cultural activities.
Inclusive Approach
Allotments should be open to all including disadvantaged groups.
health and wellbeing
The potential for these spaces to be used for issues related to health and wellbeing and nature connection be maximised or used to the full.
Local School involvement
Local Primary, Secondary Schools and 3rd Level centres be invited to become more
involved, have regular visits and be active at the allotment sites.
Training and Education
A Willow Weaving workshop is also available.
